European Day of Languages

To celebrate European Day of Languages at the academy, our MFL department presented assemblies to students to show the importance of learning a new language and how it can benefit us in so many ways. We spent the day greeting others in different languages and ran a competition during the week – the winner will be announced by the end of this week!

Why learn another language?

  • To understand millions more people around the world and to be able to REALLY understand the culture of the countries when you visit them.
  • To improve your employability.
  • 70% of British employers say that they value language skills in their employees.
  • Over 60% of British trade is with non-English speaking countries.
  • Learning another language says A LOT about you. It shows you are determined and you care about being able to communicate with others and are thoughtful.
  • Your general reading and mental skills improve through studying a language.
  • You will also find that you can communicate better.

Fun Facts!

  • It is estimated that up to 7,000 different languages are spoken around the world. 90% of these languages are used by less than 100,000 people.
  • 2,200 of the world’s languages can be found in Asia, whilst Europe has 260 languages.
  • At the age of 18 months you can speak about 50 words. At the age of 5 you can speak several thousand!
  • By the age of 21 you will have spoken about 50 million words!

So remember…

  • Not everyone speaks English – it’s a multilingual, multicultural world.
  • You do not have to be fluent in a language – there is room for all levels of ability in all types of work.
  • Language improves the quality of your life and your understanding of how other people live and think.
