Women in STEM
Article by Aliyah Begum
Year 9 Courage
On Friday 31st March, twenty-eight Year 9 girls attended a STEM event specifically designed for females. The aim was to encourage more girls into careers within the STEM industry (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) which traditionally tend to be heavily male dominated.
There were many female professionals present at the event from STEM related backgrounds, such as engineers, construction project managers, digital marketing and design specialists and banking. They all spoke about their journey into these careers and the qualifications they gained to get there.
A cardiologist delivered a workshop, and spoke about her experiences within medicine. She shared her passion and love for her job and said the best part is seeing her patients smile when they feel better, and that's something I wish to now pursue. Science and nursing seems very appealing! I think all the students who attended the event are now more enthusiastic and open-minded about these types of careers which we may not have considered before. The STEM industries are very exciting and rewarding careers to go in to.
It was a great day, and getting involved with the practical workshops and talking to professionals in industry really helped with team skills and confidence building. It has opened up avenues for our future subject and career choices.
