“Inspirational” Birmingham Principal recognised with OBE
Sunday 18 October 2020
We are extremely delighted to announce that our Principal, Herminder K Channa, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for Services to Education.
Appointed in 2015, Herminder has helped transform the secondary into a popular and successful school serving the local community in Birmingham’s Sparkhill. In just 18 months, the school moved from being in “special measures” to one judged by Ofsted to be “good” in every category.
Herminder’s career has been marked by a deep commitment to the city of Birmingham – she serves as a magistrate in the city as well as a local leader of education (LLE). Herminder is a lead inspector for Ofsted and lectures at the University of Birmingham’s school of education.
Before joining Ark Boulton, Herminder was headteacher of a Multi Faith High School in Birmingham. It was rated “outstanding” by Ofsted in 2014 during her tenure.
Herminder inspires the language of virtuous living as well as academic achievement to ensure our future leaders are good and honourable role models as well as masters in their fields. She truly believes in the work of the community, family, and school to collectively work for the success of each student, in line with the school motto, “It takes a whole community to bring up a child”. This is more so true in light of the current events in the world, as she strives to create a virtual academy on par with the physical one, to ensure that no student is left without the education they deserve - no matter the global situation.
“This is a wonderful surprise and represents an enormous tribute to the Ark Boulton Family. Staff, students and the wider school community have all helped make Ark Boulton such a wonderful school. This award is for them, and I can’t thank them enough for what they have achieved over the last few years.”
“My belief in the power of education and love for my city, Birmingham, is what drives me. Schools are more than just educational establishments. Community service, taking pride in our environment and helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves are the characteristics we want to nurture and develop in our young people. These actions are not only our civic duty but the fabric that makes us human beings.”
Mark Gregory, Ark Regional Director, said: “Herminder’s inspirational leadership has ensured Ark Boulton is a thriving school. She has both established the school at the heart of the community, and ensured that academic standards are high. In doing so, she has made sure that both staff and students feel able to make a positive and powerful difference to the local area, enhancing lives and achieving potential.”
King Solomon’s Mr Haimendorf joined Mrs Channa in receiving an OBE. Both Principals and their schools have been congratulated by Ark Schools.
Ark CEO Lucy Heller said: “These awards are a great tribute to both Herminder and Max, and to all those they work with and teach. Ark prides itself on attracting the very best school leaders to inspire and motivate all their students to reach their full potential, and I am delighted that their work has been recognised in this way."
