Why do we learn Citizenship?
Citizenship gives pupils the knowledge and skills to understand, challenge and engage with a democratic society including politics, the media, civil society, the economy, and the law. The knowledge they build should reinforce pupils understanding of how society operates and the values in which this country is governed such as tolerance, the rule of law, individual liberty, and equality. This develops their sense of belonging in an ever-changing society, enabling them to reconsider their world view by highlighting their rights and responsibilities within it. The overarching theme of this specification is, ‘How citizens can try to make a difference’. This aims to motivate and enable young people to develop skills by working alone and together to make positive differences to society-locally, national, and globally. The entire process allows them to become global active citizens which is essential for strengthening and safeguarding our society and democratic way of life here in the UK.

Our Approach
Through studying GCSE Citizenship Studies pupils will be able to gain the ability to form their own hypotheses, create sustained and reasoned arguments and reach substantiated conclusions about a wide range of citizenship issues through communicating their own and others viewpoints. The knowledge pupils acquire should allow them to create an understanding of the relationships between the different citizenship aspects studied. This should enable pupils to formulate citizenship enquiries by using a range of methods and approaches to address citizenship issues and respond with practical action whilst evaluating the effectiveness of citizenship actions in reaching intended aims. Through the pursuit of citizenship should develop a range of transferrable life skills and knowledge essential for when they enter the society as young adults.
