Why do we learn Modern Foreign Languages?
Within the Modern Languages Faculty, we aim to help students to develop into able linguists who can engage and enjoy the study of languages by increasing their knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and culture. Over time, we enable our students to develop their communication skills, cultural capital, and become outward looking citizens who respect differences. While studying languages, students acquire new skills and knowledge which help them to become articulate individuals who seek to use languages to access a career of their choice or for leisure purposes.

Our Approach
We aim that all our students grow in confidence and make progress along the three pillars of Phonics, grammar, and vocabulary. This allows them to manipulate the language by being competent in grammar, develop their memory by acquiring a larger number of words and phrases and to explore and engage with sound patterns. In addition, they develop a better understanding of their own languages, they become more collaborative as they regularly engage in working with others.
Phase/Key Stage introduction(s)
Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to develop a passion for languages through studying a linguistically and culturally engaging content. pupils acquire new knowledge, skills, and ways of thinking developed through the ability to understand and respond to a wide variety of authentic materials. In Key Stage 4 GCSE French, pupils build on the linguistic foundation acquired in Key Stage 3 both in terms of vocabulary and grammar. Pupils also develop the ability to communicate confidently and coherently with native speakers as well as increasing their knowledge and understanding of how languages work.
GCSE French allows you to broaden your knowledge of the world and the people around you. This qualification allows students to develop their ability to communicate with French native speakers in both speech and writing. Studying French can lead to careers in fields such as interpreting, teaching, languages, and community services which means you will be in a stronger position to get a job in companies with international links. Questions across all four language skills are set in common contexts, addressing a range of relevant contemporary and cultural themes. They are organised into five themes, each broken down into topics and sub-topics. The five themes are:
-
Identity and Culture.
-
Local area, holiday and travel.
-
School
-
Future aspirations, study and work.
-
International and global dimension.
